Donau Soja expert Ela Malai speaking about the soybean sector in Moldova during a television interview

On 25th of January, in the last edition of the Moldovan programme “Pământ și oameni” (EN: Earth and People) on the national channel Moldova1, our colleague Ela Malai gave an interview regarding the situation of the soybean sector in the Republic of Moldova in the context of climate change.

Due to more frequent droughts and higher temperatures, soybean production has become less prioritised, with decrease in both cultivated area and yields for farmers. She underlined the importance of adapting cultivation technologies for soybean, as it is a strategic crop in the supply with plant protein for both feed and food production. Additionally, she encouraged farmers to focus on including other protein crops as peas, chickpeas and beans to ensure sustainable supply of plant protein and development of rural areas and the commitment of Donau Soja to support protein transition in Moldova.

The programme also included market insights and competition with Ukrainian soybean from local expert, existing state support measures from the Ministry of Agriculture and importance of non-GM soybean and ecological cultivation to respond to constant demands for local and EU market.

This series of interviews was organised by the national channel Moldova1, Donau Soja and Association of Importers and Exporters of Cereals from Moldova.
