WORKING TOWARDS A SUSTAINABLE, SAFE AND EUROPEAN PROTEIN SUPPLY
WHAT WE DO
Together for a secure, European protein supply
Donau Soja is a European, multi-stakeholder, not-for-profit organisation based in Vienna (Austria) with regional offices in Serbia, Ukraine and Moldova. As a membership organisation, Donau Soja supports its partners and members in changing how Europe sources and uses plant protein. The overall goal is to increase efficiency, fairness and sustainability in European food and feed protein value chains.
Our labelling solution
Our credible certification standard Europe Soya is the foundation for transparent, European, non-GM and deforestation-free soya – designed to support sustainability efforts in the value chain and reduce product carbon footprints.
The Europe Soya logo makes these efforts visible to the consumer, creating a valuable product based on or fed with soya of European origin.
WHY WE MATTER
More soya from Europe, based on clear criteria
Europe is highly dependent on soya imports from other continents – mainly South America and the US. According to the European Commission soya production in Europe meets a third of its current demand.

Boosting local soya cultivation comes with significant benefits:
- Lower dependency & higher resilience of Europe’s protein supply
- Regional value creation
- Reduced pressure on sensitive ecosystems overseas
- Lower CO₂ footprint of selected animal products when Europe Soya-certified soya is used in the feed – compared with the reference feeds used in studies by BOKU Vienna and FiBL Austria
Soya is a multifunctional crop with numerous benefits:
- Fixes atmospheric nitrogen and can reduce the need for nitrogen-based synthetic fertilisers
- Contributing to crop diversity
- Breaking weed and pest cycles
- Contributing to improved soil fertility
