The Danube gives Donau Soja its name – and on Danube Day, we reflect on our shared duty to protect this vital river and promote sustainable agriculture in the Danube Region. You can also test your knowledge in our Danube Day quiz at the end of the article!

Danube Day and the importance of the Danube River for sustainable agriculture

The Danube River flows through or borders 10 countries, and its basin spans 19 countries. With a length of approximately 2,850 kilometres, it connects ecosystems, communities and agriculture across Europe.

At Donau Soja, the Danube symbolises our responsibility to protect one of Europe’s most precious natural resources. The fertile soils of the Danube Region owe much to the river itself. This natural wealth supports sustainable agriculture, provides drinking water to around 20 million people, and sustains exceptional biodiversity. The Danube Delta, Europe’s largest wetland and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to over 300 bird species and a remarkable variety of flora and fauna.

Regenerative agriculture: protecting the Danube Region’s soils and water

Our work is centred in the Danube Region – a region that depends on the health of the river that gives it its name. Together with our partners from Serbia to Ukraine, we promote regenerative agriculture, diverse crop rotations and deforestation-free farming. These practices protect water quality, reduce chemical inputs, and build healthy soils that store more carbon and retain more water – demonstrating that clean rivers and productive farms can go hand in hand.

Through our programmes, we contribute to climate action, biodiversity conservation and food security. We support farmers, food producers and governments in strengthening Europe’s protein supply with sustainable, non-GM soya – while safeguarding the ecosystems that sustain us all.

Sustainable soya for Europe’s protein supply

On Danube Day 2025, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting agriculture that works with nature – not against it. Because every tonne of sustainable soya starts with healthy soil and clean water.
