Supporting farmers in the transition to regenerative agriculture

Donau Soja, in collaboration with EIT Food, is implementing the ‘EIT Food Regenerative Agriculture Programme’ to empower agricultural producers in Serbia to adopt regenerative farming practices.

Through hands-on training, tailored advisory support, and knowledge-sharing events, the three-year programme supports the transition towards more climate-resilient, economically viable, and sustainable agriculture systems at the farm level to meet goals related to climate change, the need for food supply security, and the protection of our arable land.

About the programme

EIT Food’s Regenerative Agriculture Programme was launched in 2024 to support farmers in adopting practices that regenerate soil health, increase biodiversity, and strengthen the resilience of the European food system.

Donau Soja is a key regional implementation partner, coordinating the programme in Serbia and engaging with farmers.

The programme’s goals are to:

  • Increase knowledge of regenerative farming principles
  • Support farmers in applying these practices on their own farms
  • Foster a community of practice and continuous learning
  • Raise awareness about the importance of regenerative agriculture for Europe’s future food security

The programme runs from 2024 to 2026 and follows the same structure each year, onboarding new farmers annually while continuing to support previous participants.

Programme impact

Since its launch in 2024, the programme has reached dozens of farmers. Each year the programme runs builds on the previous one – adding new participants and deepening the support for ongoing transition efforts.

  • Farmers trained annually: 30+
  • On-farm advisory visits: 2 per farmer / 12+ per year
  • Field visits and peer networking sessions
  • Public event attendees: 30+ stakeholders
  • Media coverage through articles, newsletters, and interviews

Programme structure

Each programme year consists of five key stages, implemented locally and aligned with the strategic goals of EIT Food. Farmers benefit from capacity building, tailored advice, and practical guidance over the course of the programme.

Stage 1: Planning + invitation

The year begins with the preparation of a national work plan, training concepts, and a local communication strategy. Farmers get invited and selected to participate in the training sessions.

Stage 2: Farmer training sessions

30 Farmers participate in a two-day in-person training covering core modules such as soil health, ecosystem diversity, economic benefits, and practical field insights. The training aims to equip them with the skills needed to initiate the transition to regenerative practices.

Stage 3: Advisory and networking

Selected participants receive farm-level support, including two advisory visits per year, chemical and biological soil analyses, a personalised action plan on how to implement regenerative techniques on their farm, and participation in a peer learning and networking session focused on shared challenges and opportunities.

Stage 4: Public event

Each year, a national event promotes regenerative agriculture to a wider audience – including farmers, researchers, companies, and policymakers. The event raises visibility for the programme and fosters dialogue across the agricultural sector.

Stage 5: Communication and dissemination

Programme activities and success stories are shared through local and national media, including online publications, radio, newsletters, and social media – with a focus on agricultural stakeholders.

2025: New cohort of farmers onboarded

We’ve just kicked off the second year of our collaboration with EIT Food North-East in Serbia!

More than 30 agricultural producers joined our first training session of 2025 to explore regenerative farming practices and their benefits. The EIT Food Regenerative Agriculture Programme equips farmers with expert knowledge, in-depth training and expert guidance on adopting regenerative principles to improve soil health and farm resilience.

This year, 18 selected farmers will receive free, long-term support as part of the project – including soil quality assessments, data analysis, and customised regenerative practice plans to boost farm productivity and sustainability over the next three years.

Why does this matter? Healthy soils mean better yields, stronger farms, and a lower environmental footprint. And that’s a win for everyone.
Check out the first training session in action here.

2024: Public event

05.11.2024: We’re excited to kick off the first regional conference, “Ready for New EU Regulations: The Perspective of Regenerative Agriculture,” in Novi Sad, in partnership with EIT Food as part of the EIT Food Regenerative Agriculture Program!

With EIT Food’s support and our shared vision, we’re addressing the challenges posed by new EU regulations, discussing how regenerative practices can lead to climate neutrality, and focusing on the restoration of our most valuable resources—soil, water, air, and the environment.

We’re thrilled to have agricultural producers, processors, agri-food companies, media, scientists, NGOs, banks, and donors all in one place. This collaboration underscores the importance of tackling these issues together.
Donau Soja stands as your reliable partner on this journey, supporting you in your continuous development to align with the latest EU ESG standards and promoting regenerative practices.

16.04.2024: Exciting training happening in Serbia!

We have just kicked off our project with EIT Food with our first training session! More than 30 agricultural producers attended this session to learn more about regenerative practices.

Today on the second day of the training session we are in the fields – check out pictures from the training session here.

The ‘EIT Food Regenerative Agriculture Programme’ offers a comprehensive training and advisory programme to help farmers learn about the principles of regenerative agriculture and how to apply them on their farms.

As part of the project, six selected agricultural producers will receive free support over the next three years, including soil quality analysis, results analysis, and a plan for implementing regenerative practices tailored specifically to the selected farm.

2024: Start of the programme

In collaboration with Donau Soja, EIT Food enables agricultural producers from the territory of the Republic of Serbia to participate in the ‘EIT Food Regenerative Agriculture Programme’.

We invite farmers to apply via the registration link.
