Internet of Food and Farm 2020
The Internet of Food & Farm 2020 (IoF2020) project investigates and fosters a large-scale implementation of Internet of Things (IoT) in the European farming and food sector. Donau Soja and Soia Italia work together in the Use Case 1.3 ‘Soya Protein Management’ on increasing technological innovation in the cultivation and processing of soybeans. From 2017 to 2020 smart farming technologies, such as decision support systems (DSS) and IoT sensors to optimize operations, like irrigation, are applied and validated in real environments.
Accompanied by the Italian ICT company Sysman P&S, Soia Italia and Donau Soja work on the development of a DSS for soybean producers. Through the combination of various sensors data, e.g. weather station, Near-Infrared-Sensor for quality mapping, or electrical conductivity tests for soils, farmers will be supported by producing soya with higher protein content – which is one of the main quality indicators in the soya feed chain.
Most plant based proteins are derived from soya. Currently, the EU imports around 32 million tons of soya (mainly as processed soya meal) per year to feed its livestock. This makes the EU highly dependent on soya producing countries such as Brazil, Argentina and the US and has adverse effects on soil fertility, biodiversity and water quality, due to over-farming with other crops and a shorter crop rotation in these areas.
With the Use case 1.3 ‘Soya Protein Management’, Donau Soja aims to contribute to increased premium-quality soya cultivation in the EU, through the implementation of precision and smart farming innovations. With the DSS farmers learn about the production efficiency of different field zones in more detail and may gain premiums through harvest separation by quality indicators. Precise sensor data, e.g. for optimal time of irrigation or spraying, also leads to reduced water and spray consumption and protects the environment.
